Green Card Renewal Form I-90: February 2017 Update

Immigration forms will be updated periodically by USCIS. These updates may affect eligibility, add or remove questions, or even change which supporting documentation has to accompany a particular form.

The most significant change made to the I-90 Form was that the updated version no longer uses the 2D barcode technology, previously located at the bottom of each page of the form.

On February 27th, Form I-90 which is used to renew or replace a Green Card was updated. Starting on April 28, 2017 USCIS will only accept this version

When to Submit Form I-90 Green Card Renewal

Form I-90, Application to Renew or Replace your Green Card, is used by lawful permanent residents and permanent residents in commuter status to apply for replacement or renewal of existing Permanent Resident Cards.

Conditional permanent residents may also use this application to apply for replacement of an existing Permanent Resident Card (Green Card). However, they may not use this application to replace, for any reason, a Green Card that has expired or will expire within 90 days.

Lawful permanent residents and permanent residents in commuter status may use Form I-90 if their Green Card:

• expires within the next 6 months;
• was lost or stolen;
• was broken, destroyed or another type of damage has been made to it;
• was issued but never received at the provided address;
• has incorrect information;
• if when issuing the card, USCIS made a mistake, such as personal data errors; or
• if the personal information on the card has changed.

Lawful permanent residents are required to file Form I-90 at least six (6) months before the Green Card’s expiration date.

How do I know if I am sending the correct version of Form I-90

To make sure you are submitting the correct version of this form, simply check the bottom of the page where you will find the code name of the form followed by a date. The date shown reflects its edition date, or version. To know if you are filing the correct form, check the edition date at the bottom.
